The heart of the IM barcode, and the array of powerful features and services it makes possible for your mailings, is the unique Mailer ID (MID) used to identify and assign data to pieces affixed with your barcodes. MID data is included within the encoded Intelligent Mail barcode itself, along with other vital information that gives the barcode its flexible functionality.
While some BCC customers have in the past used the BCC Mailer ID for their own Track N Trace mailing jobs, having your own MID for general IM barcode use is becoming increasingly essential as POSTNET and PLANET codes begin to be phased out in favor of the all-in-one IMB.
Considerations:
- Applying for a Mailer ID is not a complex process, but as the official IMB transition date draws closer, applications will take longer to process through the USPS. The earlier you apply, the quicker your application will likely be reviewed and fulfilled.
- Even if you're not yet ready to transition to IMB, it's still in your best interest to prepare for the inevitable changeover soon by getting a Mailer ID for your company. Once you have a MID, whenever your own timetable allows for the formal transition, you'll be ready.
Create a Customer Gateway Account
The Business Customer Gateway gives a single location on the USPS web site that gives you access to channels that provide service to Full Service Intelligent Mail. The Business Customer Gateway can be accessed from a link on the bottom right of the USPS Home Page.
Get a Mailer ID
The USPS issues Mailer IDs (MIDs) to those using Intelligent Mail barcodes. The MID is a field in the IM BC that is used to identify the mailer. In order to request a Mailer ID, you must create a Customer Gateway Account. Once you have access to the Customer Gateway, select the MID link to request a Mailer ID.
Volume Rules for MIDs
9-digit
- 1st MID can be obtained with no verified volume
- 2nd MID and additional MIDs require 1 million pieces in verified volume per MID request.
6-digit
- 1 - 5 MID requires 10 million pieces per MID (i.e. 5 MIDs requires 50 million pieces of verified volume). No exception required.
